Pitchers and William Morris

Pitchers intrigue me………even at rest they have a certain kinetic energy.  They are not only useful, but if chosen carefully, beautiful as well.  Which brings me to a quote fromWilliam Morris that I have long been pondering:

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

Here we are more than a decade into the 21st century where  the integration of function and form have been the goal of designers in all fields.  Dare I think of this quote with one word changed – ‘or’ to ‘and’???  Exchanging the ever-useful Tupperware container for a vintage ironstone pitcher…useful and beautiful!
