Gates are functional, yes.  According to Webster, a gate is a moveable barrier, usually on hinges, closing an opening in a fence, wall or other enclosure.  The function, taken together with form in the French garden elevates the swinging barrier to a higher level.  Paired with stone or foliage they create a sense of anticipation……….
