Seattle Orange

Having visually soaked up the amazing green of the Pacific Northwest, I am now reflecting on another regional color statement……ORANGE!  Perhaps in an attempt to counteract the many gray days, orange is everywhere, even enlivening the exteriors of building and bridges.

Nowhere is the hue showcased better than at

Hingham, Massachusetts….part 1

Since spring seems always to come early in our part of the world……….already thinking about ways to bring freshness and sunshine inside.

Twigs, dried grasses, feathers, bird nests……all have served me well through fall and winter with a beauty all their own.

Tones of blue…exploring color

RULES ARE TO BE BROKEN…..

there was a time when various tones of blue stood alone – only the shade being changed within a single pallet

the various tones now co-exist happily side by side

Anticipation…

an-tic-i-pa-tion defined by Webster:  expectation, looking forward to, confidently, or with pleasure; expectation, hope

After the consuming intensity of the Christmas season, as the new year approaches, thoughts turn to possibilities and plans…

anticipating sharing in all the ‘firsts’ in the life of this precious baby girl in the coming year

IMG_9503

planning to take more time to ‘stop and smell the roses’

IMG_9516

expecting to share:

tasty and healthy recipes,

IMG_9495

travel near or far, past or present,

IMG_2051

family history,

and design inspiration!!!

Recently asked my take on what’s new in the design world for the coming year, I settled on the word connection.   I see  the influence of  global awareness connecting us to good stewardship of our world and our personal resources; self-awareness connecting us to how we want to live, what makes us feel comfortable;  connection with nature for the Master Designer’s inspiration; connection to our own piece of the world – light, climate, topography…; connection with a designer who can facilitate the process of connecting the client to their project in all these ways – resulting in their own self-expression.

To me as a designer, all these connections have an underlying theme:  simplicity

‘the universe loves simplification and beauty’ -Albert Einstein

‘making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity’

-Charles Mingus

‘simplicity is the ultimate sophistication’ -Leonardo Da Vinci

Anticipating a simply wonderful new year – my wish for you as well!

Trees of Christmas past

The golden years, the empty nest, retirement…whatever you choose to call the time of life beyond middle age…can be an amazingly freeing period of re-discovery and growth.  Embracing the reality in which you find yourself – holding on to value, letting go of what no longer works.  I found these words penned some time ago by Alexandra Stoddard, then writer-in residence at Victoria Magazine, to be both life-changing and life-affirming:

“Traditions that were once wonderful should not evolve into obligations.”

Tradition for our family:  big tree, real tree, green tree, hung with all the children’s ornaments – hand-made and gathered……….

the children grew and left the nest; the tradition was becoming an obligation.

Ornaments were passed to those whose small hands had made them and hung them year after year on the tree.

Do I miss the tradition (and the small hands)???  Yes…in the core of my being………..however – borrowing from Dr. Seuss:

“Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened.”

White……a color for all seasons

Do you have a favorite spot in your home; a spot that you like to change according to the season, or just on a whim?  The welsh dresser in my dining room is my go-to for a quick fix to match my mood or the time of year.  September always sends me into fits of nostalgia, nesting, and needing a new look!  Fall provides warm color choices……..however………..here in Santa Barbara the temperature has been consistently in the 80’s or higher for weeks, and because of the on-going drought we have been looking at fall colors for months!!!!  Warm colors – orange, red, rust, – just don’t feel right on so many levels!!!

LOVING WHITE…………!!!!

with a touch of green……..

with a bit of  bling………..
